What is 1100 grade aluminium?
1100 aluminum plate belongs to the industrial pure aluminum series, with an aluminum content of 99.00% or higher (mass fraction). It is non-heat-treatable and prized for its exceptional corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, low density, and excellent plasticity. While its strength is relatively low, it can be processed into various aluminum products through pressure working.
The alloy's processing characteristics are similar to 1050A. It is ideal for applications requiring good formability, high corrosion resistance, and moderate strength, such as food and chemical handling equipment, sheet metal work, hollow hardware (spun or deep-drawn), welded assemblies, reflectors, and nameplates

Properties of 1100 Aluminum Plate
1. Machinability: The machinability of 1100 aluminum is satisfactory, particularly in the soft-tempered condition. Properties improve in harder tempered conditions. Although some dry cutting is possible using carbide or high-speed steel tools, the use of lubricants is recommended.
2. Forming: This alloy exhibits excellent formability and can be formed well through cold or hot working using appropriate techniques.
3. Welding: Aluminum 1100 can be welded using conventional commercial methods. If filler rods must be used, they should be specified as Aluminum 1100. Care must be taken with butt welds, as this method may require some trial and error to achieve good-quality results.
4. Heat Treatment: This alloy does not harden through heat treatment. It can be annealed after cold working. The alloy can be forged at 950 to 700°F and, if necessary, hot-worked at 900 to 500°F. Aluminum 1100 exhibits excellent cold working properties. It can be easily cold-worked using conventional methods, and the alloy can be hardened solely through cold working.
5. Testing: Primary tests include spectroscopy, ICP metal analysis, XRF analysis of tool steel, Leco analysis, and oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen analysis; secondary tests include microwave digestion.

Fabrication Properties
-
Machinability
1100 aluminum has fair machinability, especially in soft tempers. Performance improves in harder tempers (e.g., H18). While some dry cutting is possible, carbide or high-speed tools are recommended, with lubricants for heavy cuts.
-
Forming
This alloy offers excellent formability; both cold and hot forming perform easily. In the annealed condition, it can be extensively worked with cold methods.
-
Welding
1100 can be welded by all conventional commercial methods. If filler rods are required, use 1100 filler. Butt welds may require some trial testing to achieve optimal results.
-
Heat Treatment
Not hardenable by heat treatment. Annealing can be performed after cold working. Forging temperature range: 950–700°F; hot working: 900–500°F.
-
Cold Working
Excellent cold working characteristics. Can be easily cold worked by all conventional methods-spun, drawn, or bent effectively.
-
Testing & Quality Control
Primary testing: Spectroscopy, ICP metal analysis, XRF analysis, Leco analysis (O/N/H)
Secondary testing: Microwave digestion
Full traceability and mill test reports available
What is the difference between 6061 and 1100 aluminum?
| Property | 1100 Aluminum | 6061 Aluminum |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Commercial pure aluminum (≥99% Al) | Al-Mg-Si alloy |
| Strength | Low – suitable for non-structural use | High – suitable for structural components |
| Heat Treatable | No | Yes (T4, T6 tempers) |
| Formability | Excellent – ideal for deep drawing, bending | Good – but controlled bending needed in T6 |
| Corrosion Resistance | Outstanding in humid/chemical environments | Good – may require coating in marine conditions |
| Machinability | Fair (soft, can gum tools) | Excellent for CNC machining |
| Weldability | Excellent, retains ductility | Weldable, but HAZ strength is reduced |
| Typical Applications | Chemical equipment, reflectors, nameplates, cookware | Structural frames, automotive, aerospace fittings |
| Cost | Generally more economical | Higher due to alloying/heat treatment |
Choose 1100 if your project requires deep formability, corrosion resistance, or non-structural shaping.
Choose 6061 if you need strength, machining performance, or structural reliability.
Global Applications and Success Stories
Our 1100 aluminum sheet is widely used in:
- Industrial Equipment: Heat exchangers, chemical storage tanks, and heat dissipation fins.
- Architecture and Nameplates: Reflectors, nameplates, and architectural cladding.
- Consumer Goods: High-quality cookware, bottle caps, and printing plates.
Case Study: We recently supplied 50 tons of 1100 aluminum strip in the H14 temper to a major European HVAC manufacturer for heat sink production. By optimizing the thickness tolerance to ±0.02 mm, we helped the customer increase stamping efficiency by 15%.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Can a 1100 aluminum plate be heat-treated?
A: No. 1100 aluminum is non-heat-treatable. It can only be strengthened through cold working.
Q2: Is 1100 aluminum suitable for welding?
A: Yes. 1100 aluminum can be welded by all conventional commercial methods using 1100 filler material.
Q3: What is the difference between 1100 and 3003 aluminum?
A: 1100 is commercially pure aluminum (≥99% Al), while 3003 is alloyed with manganese for higher strength while retaining good formability. 3003 offers a balance between strength and workability.
Q4: Can you provide samples for testing?
A: Yes! We offer sample cutting services for small trial orders. Contact us to discuss your testing requirements.
Q5: What surface finishes are available?
A: We offer mill finish, bright, polished, brushed, sandblasted, and anodized surfaces. Custom finishes available upon request.
Q6: What are the minimum order quantities?
A: MOQ varies by specification. For standard sizes, we accept 1-ton orders. For customized products, please inquire.
Q7: How long does delivery take?
A: For in-stock standard sizes: 3–5 working days. For customized orders, it typically takes 7–15 days, depending on processing requirements.
